Andermatt – Erstfeld: on the trail of the devil

It’s April 10, 2017: At 4:30 a. m. the alarm clock pulls me out of my sleep. I get up, have breakfast and get on my way to the station. I travel to Andermatt by S-Bahn, Regio Express and Regiobahn. Because of the altitude, it is still quite fresh in April. I walk down the Schöllenen gorge towards Göschenen and cross the Devil’s Bridge, which according to legend could only be built with the help of the devil. (more…)

Austria

It is August 4th, in the morning at 4:30 a. m. The bus from Tuzla arrives in Ljubljana. I have to wait at the station until the first train leaves for Villach at 7:00. At nine o’ clock I reach Villach, where the waiting starts again. At eleven o’ clock a train finally takes me to the Gailtal valley. In Hermagor I get off the train and am already expected by Armin, a cousin of my mother. Together we drive to his and his wife Gabi’s home in Rattendorf. (more…)

Bosnia & Herzegovina

It’s Thursday, 30 July 2015 and I walk to the Dubrovnik bus station in the morning and take the bus to Mostar. On the way we pass through Bosnia, but are only controlled by Croatian customs officers when entering and leaving the country. It is only when we enter Bosnia for the second time that we are also controlled by Bosnian officials. A few hours later we reach Mostar. (more…)

Montenegro

It’s Saturday, July 25, 2015, and I’ll take a minibus from Shodra and drive across the border to Ulcinj. There I take the connecting bus to Budva. Originally I wanted to spend at least one day there. However, as all affordable hostels are already fully booked and all were enthusiastic about Kotor, I only change there to the connecting bus, which takes me to Kotor. (more…)

Albania

It’s Wednesday, July 22nd. After a half-day stop in Prizren I wait for the bus to Tirana, which leaves in just over an hour. A lot of taxi drivers ask me if I need a cab. I’ll let you know that the bus is much cheaper. Then someone will come and offer it to me for 20 euros in Italian, he can’t speak English. I let him know that the bus would only cost about ten euros. Then he wants to drive me to Tirana for ten euros. When he confirmed to drive me to the hostel, I agreed. (more…)

Kosovo

It’s Monday, July 20, 2015. After a four hour bus ride from Skopje I arrive at the bus station in Pristina. There I find out that an American from the bus must go to the same hostel as I and we take together a taxi for three euros. He drives us to the Swiss Diamond Hotel. From there it is only about 100 meters on foot through the pedestrian zone to Han Hostel on the other side of the street. (more…)

Macedonia

After a few days in Greece I arrive in Skopje on Friday, July 17th. As the weather is extremely hot, I take a taxi to Hostel Kalonis. The young nice lady at the reception desk welcomes me and shows me the air-conditioned room. (Later it turns out that she also studies political science in her master’s degree. (more…)
